Federal Judge Orders Tribe and Energy Company to Formulate Emergency Plan

The Bad River Tribe and Canadian energy company Enbridge have been ordered by a federal judge to come up with a plan by mid December to shut down and purge the Line 5 oil and gas pipeline should erosion at Bad River increase and threaten to cause the rupture of the line. TheDailyPress reports the Bad River Tribe filed suit in 2019 to shut down and remove line 5 after the tribe decided not to renew easements for the pipeline. U.S. District Judge William Conley said risk of a significant rupture exists that could result in “catastrophic” impacts to the Bad River watershed and Lake Superior.
