Bayfield to Receive Opioid Settlement Funds

Bayfield residents will soon have the opportunity to weigh in on how they think more than $200,000 from the settlement of a lawsuit against drug manufacturers responsible for the opioid crisis the last few years should be spent. The DailyPress says the county has the choice to take a lump sum of $206,684 or a distribution of around $12,000 a year over 16 years. There is concern that the lump sum might be the best way to go, since there is no guarantee of the solvency of the drug companies in the suit. The county will use an online survey to help decide how the money should be spent. The county will take time to decide, in order to make best use of the funding. Bayfield County Director of Human Services Elizabeth Skulan has said whatever the amount, it won’t come close to covering the costs the county has borne in recent years because of the opioid epidemic.
