Although Bayfield resident and business person Mary Rice passed away several years ago, the effects of her giving nature are still being felt in the area. The DailyPress reports Jane Vogt, chair of the advisory board of the Apostle Islands and Chequamegon Bay Area Community Fund said the recent $1.5 million gift represents the final example of Mary H. Rice’s generosity and love for the area. There will be three new community grants in Mary Rice’s name, benefitting seven community funds, a competition for annual grants in Ashland and Bayfield counties and the Mary H. Rice Scholarship Fund for Native students pursuing post-secondary education, open to members of the six tribal nations of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. The distribution is the largest donation ever made to the Community Fund.
