Gogebic and Ontonago Counties Show Extreme Shortage of Housing According to New Study

The results of the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region’s housing study were presented to the Ironwood Economic Development Corporation at their meeting last week. The study, funded by the Economic Development Administration, covered Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, and Baraga counties, is part of the Pandemic Response and Resilience Plan of 2021, focusing on tourism, the workforce and housing. Lisa McKenzie, an assistant regional planner with the WUPPD said that housing is a huge problem, especially in Gogebic county, with the recent news that the Copperhead Mine will bring hundreds of jobs, meaning a major influx of workers looking for housing in Gogebic as well as western Ontonagon counties.
