Proposed millages in Ontonagon County and the village of Ontonagon will be on the ballot. The village owes approximately $8.6 million to the Municipal Employees Retirement System of Michigan, which pays pensions to employees who retire from Aspirus Ontonagon, which used to be the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital. Even though the hospital was sold to Aspirus back in 2007, the pension liability remains the responsibility of the County and the Village. In order to catch up and keep up, two millages have been proposed on the August 2nd ballot. The public is invited to the next village council meeting on the 6th at 5 pm.
