Extreme weather conditions on Monday made fighting an early morning blaze that destroyed a home between Bayfield and Cornucopia difficult and dangerous. Freezing temperatures and blowing snow caused the trip to the home by firefighters slow and hazardous. The fire gutted the home of Nick Hayes, who lived there with his two children and a guest. Bayfield firefighters were assisted by Washburn, Red Cliff and Cornucopia fire departments. Hayes and his children are staying with friends. No cause of the blaze has been determined, but foul play is not being considered a factor.
