Houghton is giving credit to students attending Michigan Tech University for increasing the city’s population by about 9%. The city’s population rose to about 8400 between 2010 and 2020, according to fresh census figures.Students were encouraged to list Houghton as their home on census forms if they spent the majority of the year there. That increase matters because money from many state and federal programs is determined by population.
