Farmers and Bird Watchers In Conflict

Bird enthusiasts and local farmers are at odds with each other over Sand Hill cranes. The population in the U.P. is increasing, and the majestic fowl have begun to supplement their normal diet with seeds and grains from agricultural fields. Senator Ed McBroom of Waucedah Township, has introduced a resolution to have the birds declared a game species, so that Fish and Wildlife might consider establishing a hunting season. Those concerned about preserving the birds say the census of the birds is inflated, and cite a number of other reasons why hunting the cranes is a bad idea. They also contend the management of the crane population is under the purview of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
