STATE TO TEST PRIVATE WELLS FOR TOXIC CHEMICALS

The presence of PFAs in the area of Gogebic Iron County Airport has triggered a second sampling phase of wells and waterways to determine the spread of those toxic chemicals into the land and water table. PFAs are found in class B type firefighting foams commonly used at airports and airstrips. The Ironwood Township wells that are the source of the city of Ironwood municipal water supply were tested for 18 PFAS compounds in October 2020 and none were found. Letters have been sent to 24 area homes and businesses to allow soil and water samples to be collected.
