M-Step …Mis-step? Here’s Lisa Rodman with the story…

Fewer than half of Michigan students are at proficiency in math and science as measured by the standardized M-STEP test. The Michigan Department of Education says the exceptions are in fifth and eleventh grade English, where more than half are proficient. The rate statewide for third-grade English dropped from 50 percent in 2015 to 46 percent this year.

An estimated 40-thousand people will take part in the annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk next week. The Mackinac Bridge Authority is again putting on a social media contest along with the Michigan Department of Transportation, asking people to share their experience with the hashtag #MightyMacWalk16 on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Gas prices continued an upward trend in the latest Triple-A Michigan survey. The average price of regular unleaded is now two-dollars-39-cents a gallon which is seven-cents higher than one week ago. Drivers in Ironwood are able to fill up this morning for (2.31) a gallon according to Gas Buddy Dot Com. Drivers in Traverse City continue to see the lowest price at two-32 a gallon while in Marquette the average price is two-dollars 46-cents a gallon.

It’s safe to swim again in Whitefish Bay

It’s safe to swim again in Whitefish Bay…The Michigan Department of Natural Resources gave the all clear signal on Monday for the beach on Lake Superior’s Whitefish Bay in Brimley State Park in Chippewa County. The beach was temporarily closed after elevated levels of E. Coli that were discovered from tests done on Thursday, August 25 by the Chippewa County Health Department. Officials reopened the beach. The rest of the park was not affected by the closure.

The health department took updated samples on Friday. The results were that there were no longer high levels of E. Coli, and that the water was safe.

MDNR will temporarily close a two-mile section of the Lake Linden ORV route

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will temporarily close a two-mile section of the Lake Linden ORV route to accommodate construction activities under the trail in Houghton County.

A trail reroute, which begins today, is expected to last until mid-November. The closure includes the area of trail between Gas Plant Road and the intersection of Hancock to Calumet Trail (snowmobile trail #17) and Lake Linden Trail (snowmobile #3). This area is north and east of Laurium.

The Lake Linden ORV route is a 16-mile trail beginning in Hancock and traveling through Dollar Bay and Lake Linden before connecting with the Keweenaw ORV Trail north of Calumet to provide a connection to Copper Harbor and various other communities along the route.

Romdna_Monday_HOuse Fire

Investigators continue to look into the cause of a fire in Ironwood over the weekend. Here’s Lisa Rodman with the story…

According to Ironwood Public Safety, officers were dispatched to a structure fire in Ironwood on the corner of Oak Street. and Hazel Street, Saturday night. And, when they arrived the first floor was engulfed in flames and there was heavy smoke coming from the home. It didn’t take long to put the fire out, and fortunately the home owner was able to escape uninjured. The fire remains under investigation.

Rabe Sentenced

A local man was sentenced for his role in a drug operation bust. Here’s Lisa Rodman with the story…

22 YO, Colten Rabe, was in County Circuit yesterday. He received 50 months to 20 years in prison, for having operated and maintained a meth lab near school property. Back on March 11th, he and five other suspects were arrested after searching a home on Mansfield Street in Ironwood. Hazardous materials associated with making meth were found.

A major marijuana bust in Big Bay

A major marijuana bust in Big Bay…more from Lin McDowell…

On Tuesday, detectives from the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) received a tip on an illegal marijuana grow operation in northern Marquette County near Big Bay. Detectives located the marijuana grow operation in a wooded area. Authorities report over 300 marijuana plants of various sizes were seized. At this time, no suspects have been arrested. The location of the marijuana grow site is not being revealed since the investigation remains ongoing.
