VC Bans Large Boathouses

LEAD: Vilas County lakes will not be home to large boathouses.

VERBATIM: That is the result of a Board of Supervisors vote which started after a handful of landowners wanted to bring in boathouses larges than the current 300 square foot limit five feet from the water. The propossal would have more than doubled that limit 35 feet from lakes 500 acres or larger. The vote was eight against the proposal and four approving it with nine supervisors absent.

LEAD: Iron River Elementary School receives national recognition.

VERBATIM: The school was given an award from the National Association of Elementary Secondary Education for being a high performance school over the last three years plus working with students in poverty or closing achievement gaps. . It’s the only school in Wisconsin to get the award. Maple School District officials received the award at a ceremony held in Washington, D.C. Iron River Elementary received a state achievement award last December.

02-27-20-Fatal Fire In Evergreen Twp

LEAD: An 84-year-old man dies in an Evergreen Township fire.

VERBATIM: The fire Monday at a Keller Road home took the life of Samuel Miller. Firefighters faced difficulties entering the home and heavy equipment was brought in to remove the debris so the search for Miller could begin. His body was found about 12 hours after the fire broke out. Investigators say Miller was using portable heaters when the fire started.

02-27-20-Mercer Snowmobiling

LEAD: It could be the last weekend of snowmobiling in Mercer.

VERBATIM: That’s according to the Mercer Area Snow Goers who say with temperatures warming up next week and no snow in the forecast this could possibly be the last good weekend to ride. The group reports te trails are in fair to good condition with routes on most roads not advised and road crossings are bare. As always conditions are always changing.

02-26-20-New Scam In Gogebic County

LEAD: The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office reports a new scam is making the rounds.

VERBATIM: Deputies say a business owner contacted them after receiving a call from a company named Hometown Productions who billed them for advertising space sold on behalf of the Sheriff’s Department that was to appear on a map. There is no connection between Hometown Productions and the sheriff’s office. This scam has happened in other cities going back at least two years.

LEAD: A man pleading guilty to stealing a Northern Goshawk from a Vilas County nest avoids jail time.

VERBATIM: Federal prosecutors say Edward Taylor of Fruitport, Michigan took a plea deal last month on charges he consipred to trade the stolen bird for another raptor. Taylor was ordered to pay a $10,000 file Lacey Act Reward Fund, in care of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The stolen bird is now in the hands of a wildlife center who plans to release it back into the wild.

02-25-20-Third Snowmobiler Killed

LEAD: A snowmobiler is killed in a crash Sunday in Iron County.

VERBATIM: According to the Iron County Sheriff’s office a 40-year-old man from Illinois was on Trail 10 in the town of Mercer early Sunday morning when his snowmobile crashed into a tree. Paramedics attempted to save the man but he ended up being pronounced dead at the crash scene. It was the third fatal snowmobile crash this past weekend with riders killed in Plum Lake and Little St. Germain Lake.

02-25-20-Vilas Co. Highway B Project Set For One Year Construction

LEAD: The Vilas County Highway Committee picks a contractor for its Highway “B” project.

VERBATIM: Pitlik & Wick of Eagle River will be constructing 20 miles of roadway from Highway 45 at Land O’ Lakes to east of Palmer Lake Road along with a section between Highway M and Crab Lake Road.. The winning bid came under the $4.5 million estimate and around $33,000 less than another contractor’s bid. Work is expected to start in May and will take a year to complete.
